Out of Step...

Hi there. One of the things that makes forums like this fun is the difference of opinion about games/genres/etc. This is especially true when outlier opinions come into play (*cough* Lost Planet 2 *cough*).

Here's the question: What's a game that is universally loved that you really don't like. Conversely, is there something that you'd objectively admit isn't that great, but you love it anyway?

For the former: Bioshock. Rapture is a stunning environment, and it's a cool experience. I just find the gameplay to be boring and repetitive. I couldn't wait to get to the end of this one.

For the latter: Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. I know that everyone loves Sands of Time, but the other two are better in my opinion. Yes, the nu-metal soundtrack was annoying, but that's what mute is for. The elephant in the room is that combat in Sand of Time was complete shit, and they really fixed it for Warrior Within. Also, the way the plot comes together was pretty cool, in my opinion.

So, how are you out of step?

I dislike God Of War and all of the Final Fantasy series. I can't debate that they aren't good games in their own right, but I just can't get past certain aspects of them. God of War is way too repetitive and FF is too weird for my tastes.

I love Animal Crossing. There I said it. I think there are many reasons to hate it and it IS definitely a niche game, but I still love the quaint atmosphere that permeates the game.
  • We actually mentioned last week doing a pair of PODcasts soon with both of those topics. We'll definitely include these answers when we record.

For me, World at War and Black Ops are derivative pieces of ass that do nothing to move the genre forward, and I think they played way worse than CoD 4 and MW2.

As for the latter, I absolutely love Earth Defense Force 2017 and the new one. They're the video game equivalent of a "better than it should be" B-Movie.
  • I'm also very lukewarm on the GoW franchise. I prefer Bayonetta/God Hand/Vanquish style action games. They're much more twitchy, but I think they're more rewarding that way.

I LOVE Metro 2033 and am very apathetic about STALKER. ehhhhhh
  • I think that Half Life 2, and pretty much all shooters on the Source engine (except Left 4 Dead which I didn't "like" but it wasn't nearly as bad) are gigantic piles of shit.  Source engine just feels to dated, clunky...weird! I just can't deal with it.  Its like its a physics game that tacked on shooting to make it interesting.  (Portal nonwithstanding)

I have tons of games that I love that no one else cares about.  I actually did a short lived series on the subject on my blog.  I'll go with Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders.  Fully aware of how clunky and weird the controls are, how terrible...TERRIBLE the voice acting and animations are, but still love the hell out of that game.
  • I hate almost all hack 'n' slash games, though I don't mind God of War and I LOVED Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, but only because of the fiction. Find games like Darksiders, Bayonette, DMC to be impossibly dull.

Child of Eden didn't do well, but I found that to be outstanding. Interesting, little known fact: I also think Mirror's Edge is a near-perfect game.

Other ones, I've already written articles about: LOVE BFBC2 but find BF3 boring, LOVE Fallout 3 but hate New Vegas and apathetic about FO1 and FO2.

  • Brink is universally reviled, but I enjoy putting it in every now and again. Not the greatest game to grace this earth, but not as bad as it's made out to be.

On the flip side, I could never get into TF2. I'm generally a huge FPS whore, and moreso when it comes to competitive multiplayer. But there's something about Team Fortress that gets me bored after 20 minutes.

Animal Crossing is amazing. Don't be ashamed. I'm waiting for the day where Nintendo realizes that Animal Crossing + Harvest Moon = success.

If they made Animal Crossing for the 3DS I would buy it release day. And buy a 3DS at the same time.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I think Shadowrun is pretty gosh darn alright. I know it's basically unfinished, and it plays like a beta for a game that will be really cool one day, but they do so many things so well (like the powers/tech integration) that it's almost easy to overlook everything else.

And I do not like jRPGs. There, I said it.
