Favorite 'Safe Zones'

    Hey all.

For me, one of the hallmarks of games (RPGs specifically) is the excitement about reaching a safe zone. This could be a town, a house, a ship...basically anywhere in which you are safe from attack. I've been playing Mass Effect 2 in anticipation of the final one, and I'm really enjoying myself in Illium. There's not a ton of stuff to do, but it's fun to hang out and listen to the conversations.

Another game which has some great towns is Final Fantasy IX. My favorite is Treno because it has great music, an auction house, and a lot of fun nooks and crannies.

    So, how about you all?

So then he says, "Oh, it's okay. Our amino acids are all different, so it's not like we can get diseases or anything if we go natural."

I really enjoyed walking around Celedon City in Red/Blue/Yellow, to me it always marked a stage where the game was really getting good. Also, it had bubbly music, you could get Eevee, the gym leader was a pushover and there was an unlimited supply of elemental stones!

The asylum in Psychonauts is great as well, I can watch Fred hopping around, fighting his battles for ages.
  • Those save rooms in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night were like pure bliss after some of the more difficult areas. Same with the safehouses in Far Cry 2 - the lack of an autosave really makes you appreciate them.

I also liked the Dark Brotherhood sanctuary in Oblivion. I liked that the more  badass I got (ie, people I killed) the more underlings I had waiting to kiss my ass when I got there.
  • The safe rooms in L4D give me a rush of endorphins after the terror that precedes them.

What I like about them is when you make it, and then have to make the decision about whether or not to try and rescue your friend (who is always Louis....always).

The campfires from Dark Souls are the most beautiful sight in the world.

Also Pokemon, when you're trekking through a new zone, and you come across a stranger that heals your party. Such a relief.

Probably my favourite town from any game ever, would be Clock Town from Majora's Mask. Countless hours spent in there, figuring out the denizens schedules and filling out my Bomber's notebook.

Couldn't have put it better myself.
  • Not an RPG, but the Back Hall in Amnesia after the horrifically frantic 'water part'. After the insane chase (despite not being able to see what's even chasing you) and massive thumping music and splashing of water, you're greeted with a large, foyer-like room with tall candlesticks, a calm sculptured fountain, and this gloriously serene music.

One of my most astounding game moments of the last year.

Howdy, Stranger!
