An Ode To Ni no Kuni’s Errand 73

I spent about twenty hours this weekend playing Ni no Kuni. I did a lot of things in the game, things which I will not repeat here for fear of spoiling it for those who haven’t played it yet (go play it), but I can tell you something I didn’t do.

I didn’t catch a Lotus Bubbud.

Oh I tried. I tried for five hours to satisfy the demands of that crazed researcher who kept showing up right before me in every town I visited, beseeching me to help him bolster his records of indigenous creatures. All he wanted was a creature “riding a blue flower.” That was it. Little did I realize that this simple request would send me into the grip of madness.

And not cool ‘destroy-the-world’ madness either. This was Emily Dickinson madness. It drove me to poetry.

An Ode to Errand 73 - Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s The Jabberwocky

‘Twas late, and the weary player
Did grind and battle in the game:
All over were the Manglerfish,
And Ice Maidens roamed the plains.

“Capture the Lotus Bubbud, little one!
Its shrooms that grow, the bubbles they spout!
Beware the Sasquish beast, and shun
The murderous Tadabout!”

He took his blazing blade in hand:
Long time the skittish foe he sought –
So rested he by the Blizzard Bloom tree,
And paged through menus in thought.

And, as in endless annoyance he stood,
The Lotus Bubbud, with innocent eyes,
Came suddenly through the frosty wood,
And fled as soon as it came!

Having overleveled quite beyond,
He ended the beast in one attack!
Left it dead, no song to be said
No chance to serenade the flowery sack.

“And, have thou captured the Lotus Bubbud?
You’ve killed over a thousand today,
But captured not a one? Back out my son!”
The scientist chortled in dismay.

‘Twas late, and the weary player
Did grind and battle in the game:
All over were the Manglerfish,
And Ice Maidens roamed the plains.

Beautiful poetry. And I feel your pain, truly after 120 kills and no tamed. Seems the best idea is to tame a low level bubbud and evolve it to a lotus.
